A very good story, well written, along a different story line than main stream westerns. I love the small town feel and the nosy neighbors in Cozy Cove. The earliest members of the legendary Lafayette Escadrille are featured prominently here, as well as the wealthy, thrill-seeking Ivy League pilots who were among the first to volunteer their services and later figured prominently in the US Air Service. Where it is not so much about living in a world that has suffered complete financial, commercial, political, social and systemic collapse, but a world without so much as a decent butcher, much less a general or hardware store, no bath houses, no barber shops and no boot makers. Some prints are double-wide but this is of little consequence since the binding doesn't allow a clear view of the entire print (some part of the print is always tucked-away in the center of the book). Images are not quite as accurate as with other more recent publications such as the Sterling/Sibley effort, (which is gorgeous and a bargain). Many are favorite destinations for travelers. These are rich multi-dimensional characters that can be both likable and odious. All serious students of contemporary Brazil should read this book. One complaint I do have is Turtledove's dismissal of baseball as a minor sport seldom worthy of comment.

The first volume of "Flame of Recca" was all about setting up the first round of main characters, introducing a villain, and bringing Recca and Yanagi together as more-than-friends-but-less-than-boyfriend/girlfriend. However, the book is fantastic. The characters, both male and female, human and anthropomorphic animals, look attractive, though admittedly, the art is the series' weakest point.
